Industry statistics

  1. 106.6 million US adults used a wearable device to track health or activity in 2024.

Source: Haridas et al., published 10 April 2026. Study.

  3. 70% of US non-federal acute-care hospitals engaged at least sometimes in all four measured interoperability activities—send, receive, find and integrate—in 2023.

Source: US Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), Data Brief 71, May 2024. Data brief.

  4. 43% of those hospitals routinely engaged in all four interoperability activities in 2023.

Source: ONC, Data Brief 71, May 2024. Data brief.

  5. 42% of those hospitals reported that clinicians often used electronically received information from outside providers at the point of care in 2023, although 71% reported routine access to necessary outside clinical information.

Source: ONC, Data Brief 71, May 2024. This measures hospital-reported use of external information, not the percentage of all health data used. Data brief.

  6. 42% of those hospitals reported sending summary-of-care documents to most or all external hospitals in 2023, a specific care-continuity gap rather than a measure of all referrals.

Source: ONC, Data Brief 71, May 2024. Data brief.

  7. 49.2% of the office day was spent on EHR and desk work versus 27.0% on direct clinical face time in a time-and-motion study of 57 US physicians in four specialties.

Source: Sinsky et al., Annals of Internal Medicine, 6 September 2016. This older, small observational sample should not be described as the current average for all clinicians. Study abstract.

  8. More than 80% of surveyed physicians reported using AI professionally in the AMA’s 2026 survey; the leading reported use was summarising medical research and standards of care.

Source: American Medical Association, 12 March 2026. This is self-reported professional use, not AI making clinical decisions. AMA survey report.

  9. 71.4 years of life expectancy versus 61.9 healthy years was the global estimate for 2021, a 9.5-year gap.

Source: World Health Organization, Global Health Estimates, life tables for 2000–2021. These are 2021 estimates, not 2026 measurements. WHO data and methods.
